I do like the minty fresh Assos experience but wondered if there are any other, good, bum butters? Maybe a home-made recipe?

We used to sell Assos, Now sell loads of "Paceline Chamois Butter" mainly the Eurostyle. (it has the Assos minty tingle!) You also get twice as much in a tub for the same money as Assos.

We have customers who refer to it as "Minty Arse Lard" 😆
Or you could just wash you smelly creatures.
Body Glide Chamois Glide, used it in my most recent century ride and it was better than Assos Chamois Cream by a long way. Doesn't evaporate away like most creams i've tried, it's more of a balm, mess free application (you don't have to dollop your hand between pot, arse crack, and chamois), highly recommended!!!
Have you tried regular butter? If it's good enough for Maria Schneider...

sudocreme - very cheap and it works well
The Udderley Smooth stuff is ok, but assos is better
and it works well
Not in my experience.
I like goosegrease myself.
Or if that's not available beefdripping's almost as good.
