Currently got some awful continental speed kings on my cross bike which have worn out in no time (on mostly off road riding!). They also seem to tear incredibly easily.

Can anyone recommend a good allrounder for a mix of bridleways, woodland and road? Must be tougher and harder wearing than the continentals!

I bought some schwalbe cx pro's of ebay- i think there are some there now still. -Not the fastest rolling and wire beaded, but cheap as and only 2 flats in 3 months of riding and commuting?

I used Conti Twisters for ages, now they seem to have disappeared from the market. Also used Specialized Houffalize( sp?) seem ok.

I use these
They work on the mixed commute that I have.

I use these - brilliant all rounder. Seem very puncture proof, even on rocky trails.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll have a look around.

The maxxis raze and schwalbe cx pros look like the type of thing I'm looking for ๐Ÿ™‚

I rate kenda small block 8s for everything except the mud. I have the 35s. Still going strong after 1 year.

Schwalbe Landcruiser.

Dirt, gravel, threepeaks, commute - bit heavy though bombproof

What you describe is not typical CX so you will probably find most CX tyres pretty rubbish for that sort of thing and last no time at all(as you have with the speedkings).
I'd get some Landcruisers on as they're bomb proof (and not expensive).

I'm currently using these on the Quantocks and I'm very pleased with them, they may not be too good in thick mud though ๐Ÿ˜‰

I've also got some Cross EVO XG's for the winter.

Surprised at the levels of wear and punctures accepted above. I use CST tyres from Raleigh. 38mm have lasted 3 summers and 2 winters of near daily use on gravel and woods. Even on the downhills in the FoD. No puntures. Good in mud and fast. 12 quid.

As Traildog says, your intended uses are not typical conditions for knobby CX tyres so anything with centre knobs will wear quickly.

However, there are several CX tyres with a file tread pattern and side knobs (a bit like the Maxxis High Roller semi slick for MTB use) which would suit... you'll get good wear characteristics on road, with good cornering grip off road from the side knobs.

Have you thought about these:

- Schwalbe Sammy Slick

- Specialized Borough Armadillo CX

- Schwalbe CX Comp

- Conti Cyclorcross Speed (comes in both 35 and 42mm widths)

I'm sure there are several others in this vein...

Maxxis Raze are very good, but I'm not sure how we'll they'll wear with much road use. Schwalbe Landcruisers are great multi-use tyres and wear like iron. Not exactly a high performance off road tyre, but you can't have everything! If you've got clearance I'm really liking Maxxis Worm Drive in a 42. Fast rolling, good volume, wear well.

ditto schwalbe landcruisers. Ride them everywhere - woods, mud, gravel, road. Bombproof and cheap.

Then swap for racing.

the raze is surprisingly good for wear... my rear has been on since sept and has loads of wear left (will easily make this sept) and the one on the front has been going for 18 months now and has more tread than the rear still.

Thats with a daily 6 mile road 2 mile off road commute (each way)
