Can anyone please give me advice to align my disc brake calipers.

I have just fitted new brake pads and am now struggling to align the calipers so that the rotor is in the centre of the pads. The rotor is now rubbing on the left side pad but there is plenty of space between the rotor and right side pad.

I have checked the pistons and these are both well back. I have also checked the rotor and this is straight. I tried sticking card in between the rotor and pads and holding the brake in while i tightened the caliper bolts but this did not help. Any ideas much appreciated?

I just loosen everything off, hold the brake on hard and tighten the bolts. Works on everything I have ever used including m/c brakes.

Assuming you have post mount calipers(slotted mountings so it can slide sideways),tighten one bolt so that it nips the caliper lightly, loosen the other and move that end of the caliper so that the gap at that end is close, then tighten that bolt. loosen the other bolt now, and move that end of the caliper across. Repeat the process from end to end until the gap is perfectly even on both sides.

I do what coatesy describes. The hold the brakes on and tighten method is flawed if you have a sticky piston etc.

thanks for the replies. i have now found the problem...my wife. i asked her to hold the brake lever in while i tightened the bolts. i am guessing she let go as i have tried again but this time compressing the brake lever by tying it with a shoelace and it worked fine.

next question - can anyone recommend a new wife? ๐Ÿ˜€

Rachel Stevens or Emma Crosby from Five News. Not sure how they'd be with bike maintenance though?
