[Closed] Alfine S500 chain set with a 10speed cassette?

[#3933688]

Looking for a cheap set of Shimano crank arms for my cyclocross bike which I run 1x10.

Anyone any experience of running the Alfine crankset with a cassette? Is the chain line suitable for a cassette and will the BB spacing be suitable for a cyclocross frame?

As these are available in black and the 130BCD will allow me to keep my existing chainring and guard, they tick all of the boxes so long as they will work okay.

Cheers

It is a fairly odd idea!

You can work out chainline from specs?

Alfine chainrings are 3/32, so a 10spd chian won't fit. But no reason not to change the chainrings and use the cranks.

Not sure about the chainline, Alfine hub is very narrow (42.5mm i think) but with a cassette thats less of an issue. Could be an issue with chainrings clashing the chainstays?

Shimano 10 speed chains are 3/32 so running the chain on the ring won't be an issue. I should have some details here on the chainline, let me go look.

Thanks. I'll be swapping the chainring and guard for my existing ones (smaller than the standard 45t so clearance shouldn't be an issue) so really just need to make sure that the chainring position is suitable for a cassette. Calculating chainline width etc makes my head spin, so I've no idea whether or not this will give an appropriate chainline for a cassette.

Al - sounds a bit odd admittedly, but at the end of the day, it is just a black single ring chainset, and since they are cheaper than 105 etc, it's one option for sorting the setup I am looking for.

Found a tech sheet for the FC-S500 and it looks like the chainline is 42.7

Thanks. In laymans terms, is that a suitable chainline for a 68mm BB CX bike?! Sounds like it would work since it seems to be in the middle of a road double.

I believe that in theory I shouldn't need BB spacers between the HTII cups for my CX frame, but presume I could squeeze in a 1mm spacer on the right hand side if I wanted to move the chainset across slightly?
