i was wondering if any Alfine users out there would be able to tell me if i can run and alfine rear wheel on a ss frame with horizontal dropouts?

and if so what shifter options are out there?

yup. fits in a Surly 1x1 no probs. use the shifter that Shimano produce - I think it's your only choice for flat bars.

What you need is the king of hub gears - the Sturmey-Archer 3 speed which comes in a 120 size. Nice alloy hub, light, and enough gears. One for uphill, one for cruising (direct drive too), and one for flat out or downhill.

I have one on a Pompino and it's nice and smooth and quiet, before that it was on my Fuji Track.
