Hey.
Had an 8-Speed Alfine for a couple of months. After a few rides it started making "Crack" Noises and a feeling of jumping a few teeth or similar now and then in 5th gear.
It seems to have become more common, now happening in all gears [I think], mostly under highish torque.
Aligning the yellow marks doesn't cure it, in fact it works better 1/2 a turn on the barrel adjuster looser than that.
I am using the Nexus 8-Speed Gripshift and a full outer. New cables, lightly greased with very thin grease.
Any ideas? Or just send it back [quite a pain as it was bought by a friend using his staff discount for a co he no-longer works for. It is possible if really necessary though].

I align mine with the yellows on the bottom side, seems to work better. Reasonably easy to take apart and clean out and chuck some gearbox oil in. Lots of info on Tinternet.
But it's new! You think it needs a clean?
I have tried dialing the alignment in by starting from waay out of adjustment in one direction, and turning it 1/4 a turn at a time to see if it works better in *any * position - can't get it working right anywhere, even when I go past the alignment the other way, [just to check all possibilities - I rode very gently when doing this].
I will try the other alignment guide though. Thanks
Mine worked loads better after proper degreasing , cleaning and just using ATF oil.
OK.
Did you have the same problems prior to that?
If its new, take it back to the shop. Mine started doing that after 6 months or so, so it went back to Madison ubnder warranty, got a full stripdown and service, got it back and all was fine.
Mine jumped a bit and was draggy.
My Alfine 8 is rock solid also with a Nexus gripshift, this sound like symptoms of the more sensitive Alfine 11.
If it functions better with the dots slightly out, it's probably the length of the inner cable from the end of the outer ferule to the bolt/clamp thingy (184 mm to bolt centre on the 11), but just set where it works best.
Also count the gear position for setup and don't rely on the shifter gear indicator.
Check there are no rough edges on your outer if you have installed and cut new cables.
No sharp bends in the cables, also I wouldn't run an Alfine on an FS
Clean the gear assembly mechanism.
Good luck
Thanks for the tips. I have aligned it using the underneath set of yellow dots and it does seem a little better.
I will look at the cables again at the weekend, but I would be disappointed if I fitted them badly - I was a bike tech for 5 years ๐
May the wind always be at your backs, kind sirs/madams.

Mine did this. I change the ratio so I was pulling away in a different gear. I think it was also 5th gear I was having problems with...
Aaah. I do have an 18t to try as well actually. Good call.
