I'am choose between Alfine 8 and Alfine 11. My goal - 500 kilometers in the other country. So, if a hub breaks, then I find myself in a very difficult situation.

Alfine 8 is more simple, but 11 have liquid oil, waterproof and since it is Shimano best hub, i think, that they pay maximum attention to the quality.

Which of this hub is more reliable?

I imagine both are capable of 500km.

deore hub would last 500 miles in its sleep and be easiest to service, why the need for internal gears?

Our Alfine 11 has been nothing but trouble - I think we're on our third? Skipping gears on the first then it's been back twice for oil leaks. Current replacement seems to be leaking as well though not as badly.

I reckon a second hand Rohloff would be more reliable and not a lot more cash. We've put many thousands of miles on Rohloffs and the only issue has been getting the sprockets off to change them

Thank you all. Then, I buy Alfine 8 and saving up money for a Rohloff.

One more question about Rohloff, it has Alfine-style shifter, not trigger?

Sorry, i mean, Rohloff has a trigger shifter like Shimano SL-S500? Or only twist?

Alfine 8 here, thousands of Km's of loaded touring and fast club runs - zero trouble. Gear it down for touring so you can climb easier and don't worry too much about pedalling on the downhill bits. If you run out of gears then just enjoy the rest !

Deffo the 8. I serviced one of the earlier ones the other day and it felt better than new despite never ever being serviced. The 11 sucks balls.

Yeah, if you can't spring for a Rohloff then the 8 - the 11 seems to have reliability problems.

Another for the 8 speed. The 11 was nothing but trouble and a pain to service as the lbs could'nt deal with it . Our 8sp has however, been faultless for ages.

Friends just did Malaga - Lakes on a tandem with a standard (i.e. not recommended for a tandem), Rohloff, faultless.

Had 8 for just over a year with no probs, and my 11 is about a year old with no problems.

Some of my findings listed below, both are on MTB's so it's not 100% relevant to you but might help.

Negative
- Adds 2-3lbs extra weight compared to my previous geared setup on the same bike.
- Maybe some drag at very low speeds(steep climbs), not 100% sure on that though.
- Cable pull has to be 100%, no kinks in cable or grit between cable and cable gully on hub.
- Gear range and steps might be too limited for some (okay for me once I got used to it)

Positive
- Nice and quiet
- Stays very clean compared to derailleur
- Runs consistently in all conditions.
- Shifting when not peddling is useful (lights, on more technical sections when pedaling isn't ideal, sudden changes in speed)
- Accelerates better under high torque than my derailleur once I got the feel of it.

Alfine really doesn't fair well for a the car park test but once you've used it properly it makes sense, don't like my 9x2 XTR as much when I ride my other bike TBH. It definitely could be better but that just takes time.
