I'm about to service my alfine hub and I have had to schools of thought to do this:
1. Dip in shimano/equivalent transmission fluid, drain and reassemble or
2. Clean and re-grease the internals and reassemble.
Anyone got any opinions on the method?
Thanks
Mine was a lot less draggy using oil but it did find its way out and onto my disc rotor. I tried two types of ATF gearbox oil, one was alot better but cant remember which one though sorry ๐ณ
Just rebuilt one of these and went for the, degrease, oil soak then drain finish off with grease. To much oil and it just finds it's way out past the seals.
I used to service Alfine hubs in the shop, if they were obviously gummed up or long overdue a service then i'd strip down, degrease in a parts washer, spray with evaporative brake cleaner to remove the degreasing solution then leave to soak overnight in an oil bath, the following day i'd lift them out and leave to drip for while then change the bearings and seals if they needed it then grease and reassemble.
If it is working fine without any shifting issues then i'd do a simple quick clean and dip in an oil bath - if it ain't broke or causing issues then do the minimal servicing necessary.
Cheers all
I did the oil bath on mine and found that if I left the bike leant up against the wall on its driveside then some oil would leak out past the screw on cap thing.
So I just got into the habit of always leaning it up the other way round.
