Can anyone recommend an spd pedal that works well with aggressive riding. I keep loosing my XT spd's when pushing bit too hard, despite having spring tension tight as it will go.
I realise its probably a mixture of bad technique as well as possibly the wrong pedals.
I used to have Dx spd's but don't fancy the extra weight and bulk, quite like the look of the new Shimano trail pedals, but looking at them I don't see they offer more support, just more pedal to find when clipping in.
I don't get on with crank bros unfortunately, as the mallets fit the bill perfectly! If only they had more positive 'click' when engaging.

What cleats have you got and how old are they?

If you have multi-release it could be the problem. Single release are all you need (twist to exit).

I use M530 - ie the Deore version of the XT ones above. If the XT are thinner I would get them. The XTR ones are definitely thinner but for the first time in shimano SPD history (I am guessing here) they have shown to be very unreliable.

Patriotpro- those are the ones I'm looking at, I take it you got good results with them?

Andy- they are single release, and only a few months old, although I have noticed a lot more movement when clipped in.

the spd mechanism is the same on the trial and non-trail pedals - maybe your pedals are just badly worn? Don't have any problem with mine and they are set to minimum tension.

This doesn't sound right...either worn cleats/knacked pedals (But then you say there only a few months old?) or your technique. I ride XT spds (Normal and Trail) all the time (Just come back from the Alps so pretty aggressive riding) and can't say I need them at a high tension to get my foot to stay on.

Are you sure your cleats are setup right?

I'd try levering out each spring on each pedal with a big screwdriver to see if there's a weak spring in there somewhere.. Otherwise I'd suggest that it's not a pedal problem ๐Ÿ™‚ Try angling the cleats in or out to give you a larger release angle.

Im a 95 kg lump, and use shimano trail pedals ( deore,xt,xtr - one of each) I have mine set to min tension and have never "pulled out" of the pedal in 2 years. The action on the xtr's was noticeably better than the others. That said, they are sitting in my garage with a broken axle.

Just tried the screwdriver advice and one spring on the LH pedal is definately weaker. Glad in a way as it means it's not my dodgy riding, ahem, skills.
Not pulling out of the pedal, just getting accidental release when shifting around on the bike in all the fun bits!
Trail pedals it is then. If anyone has any spare they want to sell, let me know.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right - Ive never had that - even riding them in Morzine.
