I've got some new forks and frame and am wondering what length to cut the steerer.

In the past I have always left the steerer quite long for fear of cutting it too short and then finding the front end too low. So I've ended up with about 40mm of spacers under the stem and then not bothered to cut it shorter later on.

So is there any advice/guidance on this kind of thing or is it just personal preference?

The manual (for the forks) will list the maximum spacer height.

I would imagine a 220mm/230mm steerer would fit most frames.

Sorry what I was driving at is what are the pro & cons of a low stack height compared to a high stack height?

( nothing in the manual reference maximum height if spacers)

pro it is lighter
cons it is smaller and probably harder to sell

decide on height of stem for you and cut appropriately

Leave it long at first with plenty of spacers.
Move them around, above/below the stem, try differnet heights, see what works.
Then cut.
