Hi, I have a single speed bike for running around the village.
I'm running a 36:16 gear ratio and I'd like to put a bigger front chainring on.
Do I need to buy a single speed specific chainring?
OR
Can I use any chainring with the correct no of teeth and PCD?

Why not just stick a smaller cog on the back?
I would get SS specific so you don't slip the chain......and if you're going big...a new chain 😆
I've got a 40t renthal that I used on the MTB commuter 1x9 before the advent of NW and retiring 😆
I have always used standard rings and never had a chakn jump of. I do ensure i have good chain tension though. TA rings have quite deep teeth.
I could fit a smaller rear cog - I hadn't thought of that 🙄
Thanks to everyone else for the ideas.
OK - just ordered a 14t rear cog.
Let's see how that works - main problem is spinning out on flat and downhill while not struggling too much on the up hills.
