Boardman sports hybrid.

I have the basic model that i paid £500 for and it's great. I replaced the cable discs with some Hope mini's i had knocking around in the shed but apart from that i've not changed a thing. I can average around 17-18mph on it so it's not too lardy, and i've ridden the C2C in a day on it so it's pretty comfy.

I can do 100 milers on it without it crippling me. Nice bike, decent for the money and has surprised me with how much fun it is to ride on the roads - i hate drop bars as well.

Personally I'd go for something with a carbon fork to take some of the road buzz/vibration out. I have something similar to that Cube with an Alu fork and it tends to be a bit wearing on the hands and wrists. Giant do a nice one around that price range.

I would have thought you'd get CX tyres on there, I have on mine.

Have a poke in your local Halfords and see if they have any of the stupidly cheap Voodoo Limba CX bikes... It's a stock clearance so won't appear on websites etc, just a case of having a look in stores. But won't be beat at £400, I think.
