[#7110221]

Currently running with an old XT derailleur which has seen better days. Looked to replace with modern SLX or XT. However I notice that the new ones do not appear to have a barrel cable adjuster. If correct, why? Can anyone advise what will I need to purchase in conjunction to get the new XT mech to work on my setup? There is cable adjustment on the shifter but this is very limited. Advice please.

Thanks

Mylo

More than enough adjustment at the shifter, never had a problem with set up on the newer mechs

The adjuster on the XT rear derailleur has been removed since 2009, I think. The shifter adjuster should be sufficient, assuming you are starting with it fully tightened and tension the cable correctly.

I have a newer XT 9 speed one and its easy to set up using the barrel adjuster on the shifter. To be honest I've always found it weird that some rear derallieurs had an extra adjuster on.

When setting up I loosen the shifter cable, wind the barrel adjuster on the shifter all the way in, then wind it back out a turn or two. Reattach the cable and set up as normal.

Deore 9spd here, no adjuster on mech itself, a couple of clicks on shifter adjuster is always sufficient.

I'm running nine speed XT on my hardtail.

There's no real need for a dérailleur barrel adjuster, the shifter adjuster works just fine.

If you nip the cable up just so when the dérailleur and shifter are set to engage the smallest sprocket then you'll be right.
