[#1385934]

Going to be building up a set of lightweight XC wheels.
Got the hubs already, Shimano XT (M775) centrelock and will be built up with Dt Swiss Competition, double butted spokes.
Will be fitted with either Maxxis Crossmarx 2.1 or Continental Speed King 2.1 tyres.

Need some ideas for the rims. Been looking at...
Mavic XC717,
Dt Swiss XR 4.2D,
Dt Swiss XR 400,
No Tubes 355,
No Tubes Olympic.

I would really like a genuine UST rim, so i don't have to mess about with rims strips and stuff. But i can't find any.
Can anyone recommend me any other rims, especially UST or advise on which ones listed would be best.
Erring on the side of the Mavics, purely as i've got them on my trail/4X bike and DH bike, both are running really well, despite the large amount of abuse they've taken.
Thanks.

Oh yeah, i didn't actually realise how light they are. I've got a pair on my Meta 4X that have been ragged on technical descents without so much of a wimper.
Any other options?

Mavic 819s are over 130g/rim heavier than a ZTR Alpine (replacement for the Olympic) by the time you include the little 'cup' things you have to build with!

If weight is a concern in the slightest, I'd get Alpines, no doubt about it, tyres seal really easily. If you're using non-UST tyres they're much better than UST rims.

They're an option.
But for tubelses i'd have to add the rim strip which surely push the weight closer to the 819s.

The Alpine rims seem to be sold out everywhere until may.

Go for Olympics then if there's a time issue. You can use rimstrips at c20g, or you can just use their yellow tape. The former is easier if you change tyres a lot.

You're still saving bags of weight over 819s.

With Alpines or Crests you do not need the rimstrip to run non UST tyres.

If you're using UST tyres then you don't need a rimstrip with any Stan's rims

Crests then only 10-15 gr per rim heavier than Alpines. They are the replacements of 355s so they should be tough enough for most things!

agree with njee20, 819 have all the pluses of mavic, straight from the factory, strong build, etc. but they are heafty, and they are a pain to build. never built a Stans rims, so can't comment, but njee knows his onions for sure

Thanks very much for the help. Just ordered a pair of Olympic rims from CRC, need them before the Alpines are available and CRC have them a £45 each, too much of a saving to say no to.
Thanks again.

dont forget you will need rim tape valvess and sealant, oh maybe a valve core remover and maybe some co2 to help inflate non tubeless tyres

I've used 717s for five years and have converted mine to tubeless. They're an excellent rim, surprisingly durable for a rim weighing less than 400g.

I've been put off the Stans rims because of the prohibitive expense, but the newer models seem to be quite a bit cheaper these days, I might have a look sometime.

They're well worth it, I found my Olympics tougher than my 717s, particularly less prone to denting, whilst being substantially lighter and immeasurably easier to run tubeless.
