Hello, I'm in the process of replacing a worn-out chainrin on my Fatbike, a Mukluk 22 model with Advent X drivetrain. However, I'm having trouble figuring out the correct offset for the chainring. The Fatbike has a Samox crankset with a 75.5mm chainline and 197mm rear hub, using a SRAM 3-bolt direct mount.
Do I need to use the SRAM -4mm offset chainring, or can I use a chainring with a different offset and still maintain an acceptable chainline that functions well? Chainrings with a -4mm offset seem hard to find and cost around 90 euros!
Whatever chain ring clears the chainstay. The chainline make no difference in practice.
I asked Salsa the same question. Just got an update from Salsa regarding chainring (the Mukluk have a Samox crankset).
Answer:
“Sammox does things a little differently as the crank spindle is wider than a similar SRAM crank. This means you actually would want to use a SRAM ring with a 3 mm offset in order to get a good chainline.”
