[#6103441]

I've just spotted and bought a couple of cheap Drift X170s off ebay to supliment my HD170 (Which I've been very happy with)...

Unlike my HD170 The X170 runs off of a pair of AA batteries so I thought I'd go and have a poke about and see whats what in the world of Rechargable AAs...

Christ its worse than buying 18650 Li-Ions for my Torches, can you really get "3000mAh Mi-MH" for a less than quid a piece or are they pulling the same tricks and labeling any old tat as a wonder cell?

Experts please advise me...

Hmmm, Eneloop XX - 2450mAh NiMH they don't look bad, but then there are a few cheap as chips alternatives on Fleabay claiming to be 2500mAh+...
4x eneloops for ~£10-12 or 4x Cheapo NiMH (Claiming 2500mAh+) for under £5...

Another option I was half considering was buying a couple of 14500 Li-Ions (3.7V) and a couple of Dummy AA cells and running each X170s off of a 1x 14500, 1x dummy AA setup, as they normally run off of regular 2x AAs in series,

I can Charge 14500 cells with my 18650 charger, my only worry would be acidentally bunging 2x 14500s in a camera and frying it... Dunno if there would be any runtime or cost advantage in doing this though...

Is it any better or worse to be running a camera at higher or lower nominal voltages 2x HR6@ ~2.0-2.4V Vs 1x 14500 @ ~3.2-3.7V???

no.

sanyo eneloop XX if you want your batteries to keep their oomph after a few months in the cupboard

Annsmann 2850 if you want a bit more oomph, and don't mind about losing a few mAh if you do leave them forgotten somewhere.

i've been caning a few sets of AA batteries in my commuter lights for years now.
