what is the best descent in yorkshire.........or what is your fave.
i dont have the health or energy to waste nowadays, so i need to get straight to the good stuff, rather than looking for it.
thanks
Define 'best'! What do you like?
My personal fav is the cheeky one near my house, sections of techy rock with bits of smooth flowy path between. If I had to a go a little bit further (and legal) then I'd pick the descent off Embsay Crag.
Personal favourites in my patch - Stockdale Lane, the fast flowy one off Weets Top down to Calton, and through the woods at Jenny Gill to Shortbank Road in Skipton.
Boot of world back of whernside down to dent...
Or cam head to starbotton... Embsy crag yes but a bit short. 0r old cote moor down to starbotton direct route...
Cam Head to Starbotton is probly my fave.
Email me if you want the cheeky details but I don't think cheeky routes should be widely published, and it'd certainly suffer from traffic as the area is well used by dog walkers. As it is they're usually friendly, but I like dogs and tend to stop so that probably helps.
Wessenden Reservoirs to Marsden is a good long, but not terribly techy one....
I live in Marsden and wessenden is a good long (3.5 mile) fast decent
But also dropping into the village from the hills (pennines) is the old pack horse road which is technical and faster than wessenden and still approx 3.5 miles
So it's fantastic if you live in Marsden !!!!!!!
plumslikerocks, jonny rocky mountain - thanks for that I've got ride up that 'decent' tommorow - in my head not the best climb in Yorkshire - #CVMBC
Wessenden is a great climb! Did you know you're allowed an extra pint if you clear the middle rocky bit? It's true. I'll be having my legs pulled off up there on the CVMBC tomorrow too, see you then!
The Marsden Packhorse is a brilliant descent, but it's only properly in condition for about ten minutes a year, the rest of the time the middle bit is The Wheeleating Bog Of Doom.
Both the Marsden descents are a bit pedally and have some up in them, but they do have convenient car parks at the top. If you had a couple of cars and willing mates you could do a sort of DIY uplift day, I've seen groups on big DH bikes doing that before.
I live near Marsden and very rarely go down Wessesndon - It's probably fun on a road bike but far too dull on a MTB! Packhorse trail is a good one though! But for me (Not done much) its the nice steep (and not entirely legal) descent from Stoodley Pike near Todmorden, it was a few years ago but I found it miles more exciting than anything Huddersfield has to offer.
I can think of loads of great little descents but they are very short.
Hebdon Bridge is probably the only place where they last a bit longer. Plus it depends on what you call great..
That one off the front of the Pike is fun but my mates have had a bollocking twice ๐
haha! That's one of many variables that makes a good descent! Wouldn't mind a guided tour around MTB-Hebden Bridge - heard good things
Cut Gate
Is cut gate in Yorkshire? If so then yep. That's long enough to be a descent ๐
The descent from Limers Gate to Wainstall's gets my vote.Showed it to some riding buddies who were grinning like maniacs at the bottom. We call it Devils Drop. Long climb out mind. You can even have some liquid refreshment at the Cat I'th Well
A pretty good one is: from 12 apostles on ilkley moor>top of rocky valley>either down the steps straight ahead, or right along top of the crags then cut down to the top of rocky valley>down the valley to white wells.
That Limers Gate one looks ace. What would you link that into to make a day ride?
Ilkley Moor - I know it as Bradley's Descent.
I love the hard climb up Copley bank, then across Norland Moor to the trig point and then the fun starts. From there it is rocky, fast singletrack stuff back down to the road.
martinhutch - Try Ogden water, Stairs Lane, Limers Gate, Ogden ๐ One of our regular rides
Cheers...still can't quite pick that out but will squint at the map some more.
What tk46hal said. Don't get bored of it. Soooo many different options to get down too. Legal and errr, not. Theres also some others on t'other side of the valley which border on too cheeky for cheeky but they're mine ๐
martin - a cracking ride is Ogden, up the BW towards Oxenhope and then when you get to the top, just before the trail starts to descent rapidly, through the gate and a short, cheeky trail across to Warley Moor res. Then around the res and pick up the trail that follows the culvert all the way around towards High Brow Knoll and veer left onto the BW towards the top end of Luddenden Dean. Thats a nice little descent. Then switchback right on yourself and a short climb puts you onto the tops of Dimmin Dale before a descent through Peckett Well (cheeky option if you want/find it, well reccommended) and then shortcut above the bus stop at the main road before 'the' Peckett Well descent (taking the right fork obviously). Push/ride up Blue Pig, some form of descent (cheeky or the zig zags down from Slack are good) to Hebden for lunch and then wind back up the High Brow Knoll where the ice cream van parks in the big layby and then pick up the culvert trail back to Ogden. Finish on the BW you'll have climbed up at the start of the ride which is a superb descent.
My faves
Elland woods
Bradley woods
Stoodley pike - both ways down
Blue pig
Anywhere round Hebden really
Sorry to jump on the thread but I'm going to be working up near Harrogate for a couple of days the week after next and hope to have time for a quick post-work ride.
What's my best option in the vicinity?
Stainburn Forest comes up on tbe Singletrack trailguide but is it going to work for an hour of riding post 6pm?
Any recommendations for somewhere to stay nearby welcomed as well.
Thanks
DBW, that route is one of my fave day's out.
lunch at the cali cafe watching the gorgeous [s]waitresses[/s] scenery....... 8)
chaos.........head to stainburn mate, good for a few hours.
Supermodel cafe Tony? Its a beautiful place to do a bit of [s]perving[/s] lunch.
Yeah, stainburn is perfect for an hours play.
If you're happy with slow and techy then Stainburn is great. It certainly isn't like any other trail centre.
From what i have experienced in Yorkshire,it would be either Gisburn the black ๐ฏ which is exceptionally scary or the Steel City downhill at Grenoside forest an exhilarating downhill indeed.
Gisburn isn't in Yorkshire. You can be strung up for less.
And if Gisburn was in Yorkshire, in certainly wouldn't contain the best descent!
i apologies wholeheartedly ๐ณ
Interestingly, large parts of Lancashire used to belong to the West Riding of Yorkshire (Domesday Book). Tosside (just up road from Gisburn Forest, still resides in the diocese of Bradford.
Correct. Todmorden as well - theres been an ongoign fight between Yorkshire and Lancashire as to who wants it. Currently Yorkshire are losing that fight.
I'm one again for the cheeky one two miles from my house... pure awesomeness - Ilkley moor, several cheeky ones in calderdale that i don't know the names or locations of because I was blind folded, thrown into an unmark jeep and driven to them by angry locals reluctant to share the treasure.
Stainburn it is then. Thanks all.
haha lancashire can keep todmorden ๐ Ilkley moor is a playground, from the cow and calf towards white wells. Hebdden Bridge, has plenty of nice descents. Stanni's drop and a couple of cheekies from Hep are my favourites.
Plenty of nice descent lines down Otley chevin too.
Up in the Dales: Buckden, Arncliffe and Embsey are great, but a cheeky one down Ingleborough is my favourite.. but its a loooong climb up!
Cheeky ingleborough? Sounds interesting..
Which cheeky Ingleborough one? There's about 4 on there!
The descent down back into Clapham from the summit, that takes you down past the Caves ๐
NY moors,
Chop gate > tripsdale > cockayne > west gill head > blosworth crossing > Urra Moor > Bilsdale hall > Chop gate.
