I'm running out of adjustment on my horizontal dropouts which I guess would indicate the chain is shot. Being new to SS bikes, can I get away with changing just the chain or will I have to change the front chain ring and freewheel too given that the teeth seem a lot larger?
Thanks as always. MM
Shorten the chain?
Hadn't actually thought of that! ๐ณ
You should get away with just swapping the chain. It might be worth checking for burring on the chain ring and file them off.
+1 shortening the chain if you can.
Half link might be an option, personally I'd just change the chain ๐
Flush the chain.
Weld on longer dropouts...
get a 29er, the chainstays are longer so your old chain will fit ๐
Shorten the chain,I've found these "SS chains" seem to get longer very quickly & by quite a bit too. You'll usually get away with a new chain on old cogs as well,my On One chain ring is nearly 3 years old,I've only just changed the freewheel & the chain is about 6 months old,it all works fine together...
retrofit black cat dropouts
Have you tried a set up that utilizes a tensioner? I used the slot dropouts with chaintugs on my Inbred but didn't get on with them so put the vertical ones on and added a tensioner which has been a much simpler, far more reliable and less faffy system for me. Some of my problems were probably caused by a wobbly rear sprocket though. It's worth checking your chain for tight spots caused by dodgy sprockets.
As already said; just shorten the chain or, if you think the chain has stretched too much, replace it.
Best replace the chain, snapage with knees into bars hurts.... I've gone through countless chains on my middleburn UNO 1/1/8 chain ring and steel 18t (29er of course!) and although both very worn, no shifting so no issue! In fact The middleburn UNO chainring has been going since 2006, could use it as a ninja star now.
