It's been several years since I bought a bike (and several years since I bought any tyres) - my new bike Marin Mount Vision has some High Roller things on them and although they seem to scoot along fine in a straight line on the road, they don't seem that great offroad - climbing on anything other than solid dry ground seems to have the tyres slipping and some of my riding last night was rather sideways.

I'm sure they will be fine for pure summer-use that doesn't involve rocks or damp patches...

Wheels are Mavic 317's - and I fancy trying tubeless but I know the rims aren't tubeless compatible so needing something to ghetto-ise them (I think that is the term) and some tyres - UST and standard.

Recommendations please - what is the current faves - I don't want anything heavy, but I want it to be durable and provide good grip/performance in pretty much all conditions - don't mind so much if it is a bit draggy on-road as long as it grips well offroad.

Current tyres are 2.1 folding things so I don't think they are cheap and nasty...I just don't seem to get on with them as well as other tyres I've ridden - previous bike had 2.4 Specialized Enduro's on it - they performed pretty well on all conditions but I reckon they might be a bit large for the majority of my riding...so looking for something slightly narrower and a bit lighter.

Thing is, I don't read many bike mags so have no idea of what is out there just now...so any advice would be appreciated.

I had a high roller on rear and found it lost grip too easily when climbing. Switched to minion rear and found it much better.
Currently running minion front 42a and minion rear 60a. Both 2.35 single ply.
