[Closed] '97 kona explosif... worth selling?

[#614322]

got a 97 explosif in the garage and its not been ridden for years since i got my Epic. Just wondered if its worth sticking on ebay or trying to sell, no idea if theres much demand for these old steel bikes (Columbus max tubing). It was a really nice bike to ride but just seems pointless keeping it in the garage gathering dust! If its not worth anything i'll maybe just give it to my brother.

Anyone sold anything similar recently? How much did you ask / get

meeee - what size is it?

Pics please to ourmaninthenorth AT googlemail.com

(Oh, and you'll find that old Kona's are sought after, with the Explosif being particularly favoured. You'll get a taker on here or on retrobikes.)

Thanks!

Tom

ah think i'll maybe sell it then. I'll stick it on here when i get some pics. Its at my old house in Newcastle though so might be a few weeks before i can post it up. Got Marzocchi marathon S forks on it but i also have some project 2's as well. Oh and its a 17" frame i think.

Anyway pics and details will be posted up in a few weeks 🙂

Edit - i'll make a note of anyone on here who's interested and email details / pics when i get them sorted.

The Colombus Max ones are a superb frame - very stiff and responsive. I've got P2 rigid forks on mine to use as a get-about - its a bit uncomfortable offroad by modern standards, to say the least!

I think you will sell it for a good price without even trying to be honest. Someone on here will take it off your hands for sure. Or Retrobike would be a good place to sell it. Just for he record I had a lesser model Kona steel frame than the Explosif in mint condition and I got £90 for it on ebay for the frame only. If it has some good parts on it and the are in good condition then it will be a suprise to you how much you will get for it. I would have had it of you if it had been a 20-21 inch.

i got £185 for a CC of that same year, it was SS'd but still had the Project 2's on so £100 is a joke! more like £300 i'd say.

£300 frame only.....not a chance. Actually.....I'm presuming this is frame only. Complete bike with reasonable components £300...yeh, that would make sense.

ok bike is here! I cleaned it up a bit and have some pics.

Firstly i'm not sure if its a 16 or 17", i'll measure it in a bit, but do i measure from centre of BB to centre of TT or to the top of the seat tube? Or somewhere else?!

As a complete bike the spec is:
Explosif frame colombus Max OR tubing Gold colour of soon to be determined size!
Marzocchi Marathon S forks 2003 80mm travel, no stanchion damage
LX or DX V brakes, not sure how to tell!
LX rear mech, Front is XT
Shifters...XT THUMBIES both sides!!!! 7 speed
Mavic 217 rims on um the silver hubs (LX?)
KONA race light bar
Bog standard stem and headset (current clamp on style not quill)
OGK grips
Control tech seatpost
Sugino Mighty Chainset
a very battered Joe murray race light saddle!

A few chips around the dropouts chainset but no major chainsuck gouges (had a chainsuck plate fitted). All chips are easily touch-up-able and i found the best colour was a gold one in the humbrol model range, but sadly cant remember the actual name!

Also got a set of Project 2 forks, but these are threaded and would need a quill stem to fit them.

So, what should i ask for it?! If its not going to go for much in the condition its in then i may give it to my bikeless brother.

I'm in the lakes (windermere) if anyone who's interested wants to see it

pics at kona explosif

the marks on the headtube logo photo arent scratches its some residue from tape i used to stop cable rubs. They come off but i need some WD40 to get rid of them all!

meeeee - can't tell if that's the right size for me.

What does it measure centre of BB to centre of top tube?

Kona has massively dropped top tube, so that dimension will tell you nothing.

My similar vintage Explosif, which is also 17", fits me like a glove - I'm 5'8" and a bit.

i'll do some measuring and post up in a bit, and i'll check out the frame number as well.

Bigdawg - no price at all yet. I started this thread originally as i wasnt sure if it was worth selling. Anyway pics are up now but i really have no idea of what i should ask for it or what people pay for retro frmaes / bikes!

Ideally i'll sell it as a bike as i cant be bothered to strip it down and havent got anywhere to store the bits.

If anyone needs more pics let me know and i'll add them to the flickr site.

Maybe this should go in classifieds now 😕

Anway frame size or measurements will be up in a bit when i've finished my cuppa. I downloaded a 97 kona catalogue from retro bike but bizarrely even though there are geometry measurements the seat tube size isnt listed!

ok i have some measurements!

No indication of size on frame number.

I measured the top tube (C on the kona geometry link above) and standover height (bit trickier as i dont know how tyre size affects this, but was 27" to top tube) and C was 22.5" so that makes it a 17"frame.

I'm about 175cm tall and it was a nice chuckable size. As the pics i took show, the top tube is quite slobing so loads of clearance, and hence the quite long seatpost.

Ok someone mentioned £300 somewhere above! If i say that price am i going to get laughed at?!! It looks like theres enough people on here with ideas about values that the ones not interested due to it being the wrong size will maybe point me in the right dircetion of a price!!!

Well...nice frame...to me the other stuff attached to it apart from the thumbies doesn't add up to a whole lot of value.
So I'll start the ball running...it is my favourite Explosif frame in a nice colour.....£200 Posted is my offer.

I'll need to see how much postage is for a frame first..

But as its its still fully built i dont know the weight yet! I'll keep your offer in mind and see how what happens over next few days 🙂
