As part of my plan to run my cx bike 1x10 I've bought a 9 speed slx shadow mech off the classifieds. I know this will work with 10 speed road shifters but will it cope with an 11-36 rear or will I be limited to 11-34. Any real world experiences would be most welcome.

It sure will do long as its long cage.
I ran an XT 9speed rear with a 12-36 cassette on my first visitation to 29'er land, no issues at all.
Just make sure you adjust the B tensioner screw properly
