I'm collecting together parts to build up a Scandal frame for my partner. Having spent the bulk of the budget on the frame/fork/wheels package to ensure future upgradability I'm on the lookout for cheap components to build up a 9 speed drivechain that can be upgraded as money allows.
I've spotted what claims to be a 9 speed Alivio chainset off ebay (Woollyhat Shop). Now Alivio is 8 speed, but the listing states 9 speed compatible chainrings. Assumming that they've changed the rings for 9 speed ones will this work okay in a 9 speed set up?
erm
new alivio is now 9 speed

Ok, that's great. The current Alivio kit on the Shimano Europe site is still 8 speed, hence the confusion. That chainset might suit then until we can afford something nicer.
