Are any bits interchangeable? Particularly interested in the crankset, are the chain rings a different thickness?

You'd be fine with a 10 speed crankset & 9 speed chain.

IMU/E the crank it doesn't matter. Everything else needs to match, either 9 or 10 speed.
My Dynasis middle chain ring didn't fit any of the 9 speed crank spiders and I had to grind some bits off my SLX cranks to make it work.

Should have been more explicit.
I am pricing up moving to 10 speed and was wondering whether the unused 9 speed XT crankset I have form a recent sale will be usable

I've just trashed my SLX big ring and have a spare 9 speed in the shed. Going to fit it and try it this morning so I'll let you know if it works.
