[#1087317]

firstly are all nine speed chains the same? by that i mean cross compatability.if i run a nine speed set up can i use anything that calls itself a nine speed chain?or are some cassette specific?

secondly what do you gain from top end cassettes as oppose to cheaper ones.is it just weight as lots of cheaper ones are boasting in reviews that they wear very well?

This thread has lots of info and opinions on cassettes.. I love XT but cant afford em so run Deores. edit.. yes just weight in my experience of them, they all last a similar time, some people swear by having 3 chains and rotating them to get more life, I just run the whole lot until its fit for the bin and then start afresh myself.

Any 9 speed chains will work fine, I run a Campag one on my MTB no problem as it was a reasonable price and a bike isnt a bike without a bit of Campag on it..

Cassette thread.

I normally buy whatever I can find the best deal on between SRAM pg990 or XT. Never noticed any differences in shifting performance so it's about weight. I'm sure when I used to run deore they'd last longer, but I ride more now so it's hard to measure.

All 9 speed chains work with 9 speed blocks.

Higher quality means lower weight, and may mean longer lasting but that is probably more down to conditions and care than anything else as unless you go to XTR or equivalent. all the sprockets are steel.
