Wondering if there's any interchangability between the components.

If I were to 'upgrade' to 10 speed from 9 I would need a cassette, chain and shifter, but would I need to change chainrings, hub (or freehub) or rear mech?

For Shimano stuff at the moment.

cheers

Amazing. I was just about to post the same question. Hubs will be identical; casettes are no wider than 9sp. So that means the rear mech will also work.
Chainrings are the mystery; will they be too thick for a 10sp chain?

nope - the chainrings are fine. Many people ride 10 speed chainset on a 9 speed chain

note - some 10 speed dura ace freehubs will only take 9 speed cassettes

Rear mechs according to Shimano are NOT compatible. The cable accuation ratio on 10 speed is different to 9 speed so you need to match mech and shifter.

But would a 9 speed chain work with the closer spacing of a 10 speed cassette?

ah right, didn't know that thanks. 9 and 10 speed on road work across the range

So it's new shifter, chain, rear mech, rear cassette?

If I was Shimano I'd claim the rear mechs weren't compatible. I bet they are.

I might try it and see.

Shimano always (eg 8 to 9, 7 to 8 ) claim that the mechs are incompatible. They're not.

New Dura Ace (and possibly Ultegra) aren't compatible but those are the exceptions - you can spot them as they have the gear cable routed under the bar tape.

No, the 9 speed rear mechs are not compatible with 10 speed shifters as they use a different actuation ratio. It's something like SRAM - 1:1, Shimano 9 speed 1:2, Shimano 10 speed 1:1.5

what about the actuation ratio of SRAM 10 speed? I heard that it was closer to Shimano's?

possibility of a shimano/sram shifter/mech mixup?
