[#5729317]

This evening, I installed a Shimano XT (CS-M737) 8 speed cassette on an older (2005 ish) American Classic made hub. The cassette lockring was torqued to spec with a torque wrench. When I then put the wheel in the truing stand, the cassette wouldn't spin! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Upon removing the cassette, I saw that there was a spacer attached to the inside of the cassette that has a sharp lip that interfered with the hub's pawl seal. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ I also have an 8 speed (CS-M900) XTR cassette as well which does not have the spacer.

But when I look parallel to the cogs, the XTR casssette's splined section ends flush with the big cog, while the XT's is offset a bit towards the smaller cogs. No doubt this is why there is a spacer.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to get this to work?

Can you turn the spacer around?

I seem to remember that 7 speed freehubs were narrower than 8 speed (or was it the other way round? ) and spacers were needed if fitting a 7 to an 8.

Correct. 8/9 are the same width.

No. Well, I can but it has the same problem reversed.

I'd use a 'normal' spacer from an chopped up old cassette or single speed conversion kit to give the same clearance.

Does seem odd - Shimano are usually fairly 'universal' with stuff like this.

I had a similar problem on a King hub. XT cassette needed a spacer, XTR didn't IIRC.

Quite odd.

Ah yes, 8-speed XT cassettes, bloody awful things, only really good for scrap, although now you don't need it could I have it for the bike parts sculpture I'm making? Obviously I'll pay the postage. ๐Ÿ˜€
