Are there any 8 speed road cassettes better suited for use with a squishy hope free hub? Am i right thinking that SRAM tend to bite the free hub worse than others?

Have a hunt and see if you can get some new old stock stuff.
Either that or file off the burs now and then.
Any current 8 speed cassette will bite but will still work
The bare hub body is no silly expensive and can be treated like a service part

I just wouldn't worry about it. I use a cheap cassette on my alu freehub body Power Tap hub and it's fine. Yes you get 9 sets of burrs rather than just the bottom couple of sprockets, but it's only cosmetic. People really do worry about it too much!

Or buy a steel freehub?

I'm not overly prissy, but I've had to use some pretty alarming force to get the cassette off my ringle hub when its cut itself in.
