[Closed] 717 replacement...To UST or not to UST?

[#808326]

A rather clumsy landing on my Mavic XC717 rims has added another - rather serious - ding. Time to get something a bit tougher - but not too heavy - to cope with my ungraceful riding style. Eyeing up the Mavic XM819 UST. Anyone got any comments on UST? I still want to keep the weight down as much as possible. Are the tyres a lot heavier?

Thanks

Yes, decent UST tyres are a bit heavier. But you get less punctures.

Does the weight saved on tubes offset the sealant/heavier tyre?

Not really but you can run lower pressures without pinch flatting

819 rims will also be heavier but stronger than 717

819s are 2mm wider, tubeless ready and stronger/stiffer and eyeletted (I think)

You could always run tubless ready tyres rather than full-on UST, if weight is an issue. Bontrager and Specialized do them, amongst others. UST bead without the thick sidewall. You have to use sealant but that should mean less punctures. I've been running a Spesh Fastrack LK over the summer with Stan sealant on an 819 rim. Easy to seat and nothing that's needed more than a pause to let the sealant set before riding on.

If your dinging 717's then consider the robuster and slightly heavier 719's

I went for an 819 on my front wheel but had problems with the seal between the rubber tyre and the metal rim and in the end had to put a rim strip in to stop it burping.

The problem with tubeless rims like the 819's is that they are a faff to build and work on due to the way the spoke nipples have to be mounted into the rim.

So having messed around with this stuff a bit my prefered rim/tyre/tube solution is Mavic 719 set up with a getto tubeless system and a Maxxis (normally High Roller) tyre

I'm running my 819s with normal ADvantage tyres and sealant. To avoid the burping issue I wrapped a few wraps of insulating tape around the rim to make the tyre fit tighter. this made inflating it a bit tricky, but once up its stayed up ever since, with no burps.

overall i'm sure its slightly heavier than my 717s with tubes and light tyres, but not enough to notice, and the faster rolling of the tubeless setup more than makes up for it anyway.

Strong than a 717 but not silly heavy with the option of running UST? Sounds very much like the perfect description of a Stan's Flow rim to me.

Stan's 355s or Flows. Much better in every respect. IMO.

Run 819s on two of my bike, never had any problems with burping, only marginally more complex to build and make very strong wheels

ditch the Mavic fetish and move onto Stans rims. best thing I did. initialy seems a bit expensive, but if you can affordthe up front costs it, then defo a great longer term investment.

if you are into clumsy landings, then try out their Flow rims... v-strong. and then you can try out the various tubeless options, or revert to tubes depending on what you find works for you.

got mine built by justridingalong and they are without doubt the strongest and best built wheels I've had.

Had Flows for about a year - very pleased with them. As MisterT Says, you can play with any combination of tubelesss - that and their impressive weight/stiffness/strength swung it for me. They were only £51 per rim when I had mine built though. That said, if one should fail, I'll get another no hesitation.

No Mavic fetish so open to suggestions, but £81 for ONE rim for Stans?!! And that was reduced from £90 (Rutland Cycles) 😯

Jolly Green Giant - there's nothing wrong with my hub so reluctant to splash out on a new wheel if I can help it

buy a built wheel, sell your old hub and it should work out cheaper than just the stans rim!

i've got some 819 and 717 i've dinged the 717 but 819 still undinged and true, they are heavier though. fwiw 717 work ok tubeless as long as you you dont like jumping or are heavy
stans would be my choice if considering tubeless, otherwise stick with 717 for the value

Stans for sure- but not the 355 or the flow- go with the arch, a lot stiffer then 355 but only 400 gms a rim - thats the same as 717 but a lot stronger. see Freeborn in horsham for a good deal- I just had some Hope Pro 11 with Arch rims and DB spoked done for £320 ish. Rims on their own are about £70

My 819s have burped once in 4 years but I don't do much heavy stuff - I just wanted a reliable and for my type of (jey) riding, bullet proof wheel set and that they have been. Just gone over to Stans ZTR Olympics with non UST tyres and very nice and light and so far wholly reliable in terms of not burping, holding pressure, not puncturing and working well. Using Racing Ralphs.

If you jump / are lardy / clumsy then 819s sound a safer bet. If you want lightweight with tubeless benefits then the ZTR Olympics must be hard to beat.

Or ztr 355s if you want light weight, but want a bit more peace of mind then the olympics. And they're only about 20g more per rim, I think.
