Most 29er rear wheels are 700c / 135mm

As above, 29er wheel (same/similar diameter as road 700c)
Alternatively, go for a hope road hoop and spec a longer axle, or go for a cheapy commuter bike wheel.

As above - 29er wheels are 700c and will replace 26" mtb wheels but you will have to use a thinner tyre (probably)

I have 29er wheels on my lavadome with 40mm tyres on it and discs and no problems.

You'll probably need to recenter the brake caliper.

Proper handbuilt set, any MTB hub should go onto any road rim, number of holes permiting.

over on road cc there was (about 3 weeks ago?) a review of a kinesis wheel set for cx with 135mm rear - cos the pro6 disk is 135mm rear

potential problem with a lot of off the shelf 29er wheels is that rims aren't designed to take narrower tyres - but i'm sure people do

It will fit assuming your 26" MTB has room for it. Check with a measuring stick.
Typical issue arising from some dimwit giving a new name to an old standard.
