[#2030576]

I find myself using my Orange P7 on the road more and more and with winter looming my commute is set to become all tarmac too.

Has anyone fitted road wheels to their P7, and if so what sort of clearance is left ? I would like to keep things simple and leave the standard Tora 302s on the frame if possible, so anyone who has successfully fitted road wheels to this fork please let me know your thoughts.

Also, I aim to put a close ratio cassette on the road wheels. If I stick to 9 speed, am I likely to have any indexing problems ?

fitted them to my Wanga,if you are using road tyres they will have similar outside diameter to 26" wheels with tyre so no clearance issues. close ratio 9 speed road cassette has same spacing as mtb, so no issues there (well it worked fine for me)you probably won't use the granny or middle ring though

Seems like overkill to me. Wouldn't slicks on 26" do the job ?

yep - ran 700c on a P7 (rigid) for 6 months after my commuting bike was wrecked in a crash. 6 months of 40+ mile commuting 2 to 3 times a week and it was fine.

I did flip the stem over to lower the front end though as it wasn't too efficient over that distance.

I had a road cassette and it was fine with no indexing issues (so long as the MTB and road wheels have similar amounts of wear).

Overkill I suppose, but the bike's always got the wrong tyres on from the last time I rode it (slicks vs off-road) so a second set of wheels with the tyres already on has always been on my wish list. That being the case, why not[b] make them road specific ? My current slicks can knock 10 minutes off the 16 mile commute (they can cost me that if I take them off-road though !), so I'm keen to exploit any other small advantages to be had.

Bigger wheels = higher top speed on tarmac flats ?

rOcKeTdOg, illuminate the ignorant, why wouldn't I use the other chainrings ? Does it affect the gearing so much, or is it something to do with road cassettes ?

quite simply because the gearing tends to be so low you'll spin out and spend the majority of the time on the big ring unless it's seriously hilly where you are, afterall a 32/32T middle ring even with a road cassette is well below a 39T on a standard road crank
