Will 700c wheels fit in a frame designed for 27 1/4" wheels? Is there enough adjustment in (700c) brake calipers if the wheels are a different diameter?

Cheers in advance.

You might be ok if you use a deep drop brake.

Thanks, Simon. Do you think it's worth the risk in trying, then?

Not sure - how would that affect it?

Sheldon Brown reckons that a 700c tyre is an ISO of 622mm whilst a 27 x anything is 635mm (HERE)

You will need a long drop brake and as Soobalis says the rear spacing is liekly to be smaller (120mm against a modern sixe of 130mm)

This is not an insurmountable problem you will simply have to muscle the new wheel in between the dropouts. You can 'cold set' them to widen them permantly but my fix simply has the rear drops flexed out to fit the more modern wheel.

Good luck and post pics, I love rebuilt old road bikes

Thanks Handsomedog - really appreciated. I think I'm going to give this one a miss though as I'm trying to keep within a budget and have some very swish Ultegra brakes from the early '90s that I want to use.

Rather than getting some more brakes, I'm going to hang out for a frame designed for 700c wheels to make into the fixie. I have everything ready to go - and thought I had the frame, but the stuck seatpost is proving insurmountable at the moment... hence the search for an alternative frame.
