[#5292557]

Refurbing a friends old bike (my old bike I sold to him a few years ago...a DB Ascent EX)...no problem with finding 7 speed cassette, chain etc but having problems with chainrings. Might leave the outer but middle and inner are 110 and 74, 5 bolt.

Any suggestions (low end budget)? 8 speed chain rings?

You can get complete chain sets for £20. Pointless replacing rings really.

Yeah, I'm coming to that conclusion Peter. I like the idea of keeping the old original cranks going as there's nothing wrong with them but I've been looking at Shimano Alivio 7/8 speed chainsets for about £27 on eBay

Have a look on CRC. There used to be some for absolute buttons on there. Even RRP isn't too salty on the low end shimano stuff.

Fun you should mention has a bought a couple of shimano square taper cranksets earlier this year for silly money just for the steel rings but bargains like that have dried up. I still have a set and was pondering whether to just stick that on: I'm guessing 9-speed chainset with the rest 7 speed ain't a sensible idea?

:edit: FSA out of stock. M442 is 9 speed...as above, would it work with 7?
