I've got a 15 year old mountian bike I use for commuting, I've changed the chain and cassette as it was slipping, but it's still slipping under load, probably because the chainrings are worn.

Problem is it seems to have some kind of cheapo chainset where the rings are welded onto the crank, so I can't just bolt new ones on. It's some kind of Shimano square taper crankset with the code 'FC-C103' on the crank arm.

Any ides on the cheapest way forward? I've not found this FC-C103 crankset on the web anywhere, I have found an Alivio crankset though the chainring sizes are different (my existing is a 28-??-48).

Cheers

John

Cheapest sensible option is likely to be a Deore Hollowtech 2 set up, as buying a cheap chainset will probably result in needing a new bottom bracket too, at which point it's probably as cheap to get a HT2 setup.

Rings are available either 22/32/44 or 26/36/48, the latter being closer to your existing setup.

The cheapest option would be an FC-M191 square taper chainset in 48/38/28 set up. These are around £30.

Thanks, that matches what I have now. And only £20 from SJS 🙂

You may also find you need a shorter BB to go with it, older ones were usually longer, often 122.5mm.
