Doing some repairs on a kids bike for a friend. We have a spare 8sp shifter. 6/7/8 speed are all the same cassette spacing aren't they? So I can stick the 8sp shifter on, adjust so 2 gears are locked out and we're away.
Am I right?

Right hand pedal = right hand thread

7&8 is definitely ok. I thought 6 was different though
7 and 8 are close, 6 is different.
I concur that 6-sp is wider than 7 and 8.
I tried to get a 6-sp shifter to work with a 7-sp freewheel on a roady and it would not play nicely.
Sorry Peter, you need a different shifter or freewheel.
If you want a 14-28 7-speed screw-on freewheel, then I have one you can collect from Winnersh.

Well, they're all slightly different, but with reasonable float in the rear mech it does work. The important bit isn't the sprocket pitch, it's the cable pull. Depends what rear mech is on there as well.

Here is the definitive sprocket spacing table.
7 and 8 are different but only slightly and the Centeron Shimano Guide Pulley usually takes up the difference so it all works.
6 is too wide for this to work with all permutations.
