Is there a left and right or are they identical aside from the straps?

Yes and no! I have two pairs. My older ones are marked LGL and LGR large left ,large right but my new pair aren't. Can't tell the difference TBH

Likewise, some of the 'models' you see wearing them in bike mags (for the d30 ones) have the little orange tab on the inside of the knee, some on the outside.
I actually enquired and had the official reply that the little orange tab should be on the inside of the leg, not outside, this makes the velcro straps do up the same as on Straits.
As for the older Kyle Straits the hard shell within had a specific knee shape to it (well felt like it did).

My 2011 Kyle Straits have a little blue tab on the side of the pads. I run mine with the blue tabe and the strap pointing outwards when on.

If you wear them upside-down then they are 199s.

I wear my Kyle straits pulling the straps from the inside of me legs to the outside, that way, any extra loose strappage does not hit me frame or owt.

I do this too.

Anyone offer any advice on washing them? Machine/handwash/or just leave muddy, stinky and rancid?

At the moment mine are just left dirty but am concidering washing them in the machine using bio washing powder and putting the pads inside an old pillow case or similr to give them some kind of protection from teh straps geting caut in the machine.

I clean pads by brushing off dried crunge then using a foaming carpet cleaner spray, seems to work well enough

I just bung mine in the machine - they come out looking like new, Just don't wash them too hot as that would affect the neoprene. 30/40 degrees seems ok.

I just lob mine in the machine. Sports wash at 30 degrees with a little bit of detergent. They come out looking like new.
