bought a whyte m1o9 which has 100mm of travel and it came with a 80mm stem , but I tried a 60mm stem and liked the quicker steering ! its a large so have the extra length in the top tube . I know its a xc bike but where I live 100mm is plenty ! whats your thoughts guys? it also has a 69 deg head angle
Richie
whatever suits you
Nothing longer than 70mm on any of my 29ers Richie. Seem to work better with shorter stems for me. Go for it 😀
Hi, go with what you find comfortable and works for you. I have a trek superfly 29er 110mm travel and run a 60mm stem with 720mm bars which is the same setup on my remedy - this works for me on both bikes.
just wondered if it might be too twitchy on the downhill 🙂
cheers guys ! I do like responsive handling and I used to own a cotic soul with 120mm fork with 60mm stem so this set up should be fine on a 29er ! basically I have turned it into a short travel trail bike which is what I want for my local rides 🙂
M109 has quite a long top tube for its size, and relatively stable geometry, so I'd say its one bike that will still be fine with a shorter stem.
Anyway, it's all personal preference anyway.
really what suits you but for me
large sultan 45mm stem and 780 bars
very stable and comfortable
whatever suits best for fit etc.
Thanks for your help again , I'm happy now !
I honestly don't believe you can't work out that it makes sense to run a shorter stem?

It does until it makes the bike the wrong size for you and makes it uncomfortable to ride for more than an hour.
What is the wrong size? It's a mountain bike not a road bike, I'd prioritise handling before optimised pedalling position.
IMO if you can't run an at least 50mm stem (with 740mm+ bars) your frame is too small.

Answer

Not all people are the same proportions, not all people are the same, hence not all people follow a formula.
Seen plenty of people on small "Chuckable" bikes (ie bikes that are too small) that end up either removing their knee caps on the bars/shifters or being cramped and unable to ride "normally"
If you run your stem too short then you can compromise the cockpit too much. At that point the frame may be too small, looking at a lot of modern bikes they have very low standovers compared to the length in the top, allowing a lot of room for saddle drop/maneuverability but still delivering the right TT length.
I'd prioritise handling before optimised pedalling position.
Generally true but if you want to ride for a decent amount of time then you need both.
I'm running a 65mm sunline with 762's and rebas at 100mm on my medium Solaris and haven't died yet.
70mm/720mm on a 100mm FS 29er here, feels right enough..
60mm stem, 760 el guapo flat bar on 100mm travel Yeti Big Top.
50mm x zero here on 80mm forked, Niner HT.
Feels ok but keen to try a 70mm x 35deg.
50 mm stem with Sunline flat bars at about 740mm width on my Inbred 29er - feels good to me 🙂
