wife recently got herself a Specialized Rockhopper and seems very happy with it. Two friends of ours recently came with us to the Alps and gave their £600 Rockhoppers a good beasting without issue.

On One are doing some good deals at the moment, IIRC.

Check out their site.

Carrera Fury, ridiculously good value, especially last year's. A wee bit burly for a pure XC bike mind.

Have a look at the boardman mountain bikes, they're superb value for money but come from halfrauds so are (often, but not always) built by YTS numpties (is there such a thing as a YTS now?).

giant xtc is good, or check out merlin malts. They're good, and always get good reviews.

SH Cannondale F500 (or similar)

Those things should come with a warning sticker "Caution this bike is F****** Fast"

I'd forgotten:

+How fast tires that arent 2.35 wide are.
+How much weight can b saved by not having disks and the chunky hubs that go with them.
+What a stiff frame accelerates like
