I am after some help with understanding what my options are for replacing the chainset on my road-bike (I know this is a MTB forum but some of you guys must be in to both!). I currently have a 52/42 double chainset. What can I replace this with and do I have to change anything else if? For example, if I put a 52/39 on it do I have to adjust the front mech, chain, rear mech etc. or is it bolt on bolt off?
Any help would be appreciated.

No adjustment needed. There is a slight chance your chain will be too long, and you'll have to whip a link out, but that's about it.
