[#6338035]

I'm after something cheap and cheerful...

It will do winter XC stuff, along with a 'road/touring' early morning while the wife is asleep bike in France next month.

Budget is £500, it wants to have disc brakes (don't care what, I've got nice ones at home to stick on it)

I'll probably 1x10 (or 8 or 9) it, so gearing isn't paramount to me.

I'd like pretty... functional and 'nice' but without breaking the bank

Currently winning is one of these.

When there's an offer on, Voodoo Bizango... £600 normally but they've been down in the £400s. But they're pushing road just now so there might be a wait...

I saw the Ramin, but not sure I'm ready for rigid.

swapping out the crankset would be fairly painless as I have an XT crankset at home..

It's an acquired taste, but I would rather have a rigid fork than a rubbish/heavy budget one.

Would rather use a Girvin flexstem 😉

That Ramin is a great example of a generic bike.like if your mate said he wanted a bike meaning nothing specific that would fit the bill

XCM isn't so bad- pretty much the worst fork that it's a good idea to have in a bike, mind. Needs a fair amount of TLC as the seals aren't great and the internals are delicate, though. If at all possible you want to do better.

Thing with the Ramin is, it's far enough under budget that if you hate rigid you can probably find a set of decent used forks for it. It must be made of bricks though at that weight for a rigid...

Seems good spec. on paper, haven't ridden one so can't say if it's any good or not, but you don't really get any stinkers of bikes anymore as designers can just copy geo. of a frame that they know that works

I'm a bit thick, so don't fully get what you mean. Can you explain? I guess if you could describe a non-generic bike, that would help.

The wheels. They ain't light.

Assuming I can find the QR endcaps for both ends it will get the HOPE pro2 evo/Crests fitted ASAP. If not, i'll have to buy a set of converters but they're not expensive so will get some of the weight off it pretty quickly.

Pick up tomorrow from my local Evans.

Can we just ban any more Ramin One talk please?

I know it's the bargain of the week, and there is one in my size in Evans 5 minutes walk from my desk. I need some support to resist 😥

It must be made of bricks though at that weight for a rigid...

Just over 27lb, 2-4lbs less than most at that price. The single ring and rigid fork saves about 2 1/2, maybe 3lbs. How much does a Hardrock Sport or similar weight?

Wheels .. rims are 500g, 19mm. Nothing excessive, but the rear hub isn't light, its a Shimano M475 so easy to sort / service / replace freehubs etc.

So it's not a featherweight, but for a £500 bike with a that sort of ride feel it's not carrying unused pounds of lard either.

a great example of a generic bike
That's a good thing for a £500 bike right? : )

I can see it getting a few winter 'upgrades' if the prices are right on things like carbon bars/seatpost after it gets the tyres. Long term it may even get the 130mm Fox's that are currently on the MetaAM, they'll then be replaced on there by the new fangled RSs that everyone is raving about. But that's unlikely to be before Feb (bonus time)

edit : oh... it can't... they're Tapered forks in the Meta. Ooops.

Weeksy, just fit an XX44 lower cup (44mm ID with external cup for 1.5" lower) and it'll take a tapered fork, it's the same headtube as the Ramins that have tapered forks. 130mm is longer than the bike is rated for though, rides better at 100-120mm.

It's cool mate, i'll just pick up a cheap set of REBA or Recons or something over winter if I feel the need. The bike will be starting most of it's life as a Road/Commute before the mud arrives anyway. Well, apart from XC racing which it's planned for 😉 anyone can suffer a bit of bumpiness for an hour I rekon 🙂

I bought the model up from this at £385.
http://www.merlincycles.com/beone-crd-sport-ltd-alloy-29er-mountain-bike-65323.html

Then sold the 6 lb forks & drive train. Put an ss kit & on one carbon forks on it & ended up with an XL 29er which weighs 22lbs & cost £400ish.

A generic bike is very do it all.

That Ramin could be used as a commuter, mixed on off road rides,Tourer, ride to the pub, road rides, single track and maybe even a task centre.you could even do an xc race, time trial our cuckoo cross race on it

A fs would be better at some of these but worse at others. A road bike would do others better but be no real option at trial centre

Most of us are on n+1

This is for your mate who is going to have 1

I've got a Ramin Four for riding abroad where I work and it's blooming ace! Will probably get another (Ramin 5) next year for UK duties. Great handling bike!

I this context yes generic is a compliment

Task centre means trail centre

Cuckoo means cyclo cross
