Hi, a mate has £500 to buy a new MTB. He mainly intends to use it for cross country riding, so I'm thinking hardtail... Any suggestions?
but this months mag and have a read would be my suggestion.
if he knows what he's doing secondhand maybe worth looking at as well.
As per the reccomendation in issue 49 of the magazine?
£500 Specialized hardrock with hydraulics and rockshoz fork?

bit of a broken record, but I would have a look here:

Commencal Normal 09
Avoid basic SRAM - made of cheese in my experience.
Both suggestions above are good - the Giant is a bargain.
For less than £30 over budget you can get the Combi Disc:

The bottom range Boardman bike looks pretty good as well, although it does mean you have to deal with Halfords!!
I'd go second hand, I picked up a fully built cove handjob off ebay for that.
Am I missing something or are the Rockshox Recons bloody good value on that Giant? http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b0s2p1264&z=1529
Giant is a 'kin bargain at that price
My mate just bought a Kona Caldera 2008 brand new and they have the Rockshox Tora 302 for £500, was originally £700.
