A colleague at my lab's chain has died of being about 30 years old and I'm not sure where to get a replacement. It's a 2x 5 speed Huret-Sachs set up so I'm guessing it's wider and thus not compatible with 7 speed offerings.

Any ideas of what I could but on it or should I just tell her the bike's worth less than the chain and to move on? It would be a shame to waste an otherwise perfectly functional bike, and not very eco-friendly.

How fit is she? Worth just replacing the drive train?

I believe all 5-8 speed chains are the same width so it should work perfectly well with a basic 8-speed chain.

Ha! No, been there, done that; don't want to get involved in anything as onerous as replacing the drive chain!
That Clarks chain should be just the trick!
Cheers STW sages

If it's as old/worn as you're suggesting, there's a fair chance that a new chain won't sit well on old chain-rings/cassette and will just skip over the worn teeth...

Worth checking but there is usually lots of meat on the old 5 speed rings and sprockets.

Aye checked it today and it looks like it's hardly been used. It's a shopper style bike so doubt it's seen much action.

You could always see if there is a local bike recycling charity or project nearby that could help.

It's the kind of thing we fix all the time ๐Ÿ™‚
