I've just bent my long term 20" dn6 inbred and was looking to replace it with an 18" 456, as i'm 6 Ft3 and 34" inside leg - I was wondering of any of our larger riders run an 18" ok?
Im 6ft3 and ran an 18 for a while, found it too short and it annoyed me that i couldnt get the saddle far enough back due to the steep seat angle (and i was running 140mm forks!), apparently i ride where its too flat. I was going to get a 20" instead but just got rid as the 20" isnt much longer and that seat position was just not comfortable.
Im 6ft 2" and have both a 20" DN6 inbred, and more recently a 20" 456. Ive ridden a 18" which felt nice and compact, but i couldnt get the saddle up to a decent pedalling height. Depends on the type of riding you want to do on it, i just ride 'XC' stuff so the larger frame suits me.
The 20" DN6 felt to much like a gate,i'd like something a bit more flickable size wise - does the 20" 456 feel any smaller to ride then?
Doesnt feel any smaller really - for pedalling height i have a fair bit of seatpost showing so it felt fine size wise to me. The main difference between the two i can tell is it seems to be stiffer and the slacker geometry gives more of a relaxed ride. This could all be in my head though... ๐ฏ
6FT 4", 34" LEG, TRIED BOTH, 18 TOO SMALL AS NOT ENOUGH SEATPOST TO PEDAL EFEFCTIVELY, 20" IS NOT MUCH MORE OF A GATE REALLY, FITS ME AND SUITS ME FINE
I'm 6'4" tall. You're also tall. Face facts, to get a bike that fits, we need to ride gates.
Agree, my 'handicap' in sizings are my long legs - once I'd accepted this it was easy.
6'2" with a 34" inside leg - ride a 20" 456, fits great.
Do find that is better with high/wide (50mm/711mm) bars and a goodly stack of washers under the (100mm) stem.
I run 90mm stem 15 deg rise with around 30mm stack.
Tis great at that height !
Again 6ft 4" and ride a 20" 456 70mm stem with fleegle bars and a 25mm layback post. Fits well but I think I'll go for a 29er next time as the geometry is meant to suit taller people. Big wheels = more comfort!
I am only 6' 1" and 32" inside leg and I only have a little bit left on the 18" frame on my 456 running a 410mm in line Thomson seatpost (all the other bent!)
There isn't a big jump in top tube length between the 18" and 20". If you try and squeeze onto the 18" you might find the front end wanders on the climbs.
Again 6'3" on a 20", had an 18" original inbred and it was fine for a short blast but torture on any ride over an hour!
6'1" and a 34" inside leg. I found the 18" too small and ended up selling it and replacing it with a 20"
Face facts, you should be asking the real question which is "why am i not riding a 29er" ๐
If you've not tried one then i would do so before you buy a new frame, it might surprise you, it did me ๐

+1
im not tall but currently on a 16 and im five ten. Rides great but my 410 post is nearly all the way out and ive 30mm of spacers im thinking of changin to an 18 what do you think . Anyone lol ๐ it rides great and fits lovely just with the post and spacers i can help but think it looks a bit like a bike thats a bit small if you know what i mean
6'5", went out on my new summer season today, which is an 18".
felt incredibly short, but im used to riding a 21" full susser, so it would.
should be brilliant for riding as a dirt bike going down, a bit of a barsteward to lug uphill.
(but then mine is built incredibly heavily, and i have a short stem on it)
400mm seatpost is fine on mine, i can get it up to whippet height.
i went for a 25 quid NC17 post off of crc.
its niiiice
Olly- nice bike! Building up my shiny new summer season just now too, gone for the 20" as am a little taller than you. How did you find the short stem- enough reach for you?
I'm 6ft 1". Had a 18" inbred and sold it for a slidy drop out 20" Inbred but it was a bit like riding a fence panel and ended up on a 20" summer season which was great. Now on a 20" ti456 and loving it. ๐ Maybe the 456's are more compact?
18" inbred I couldn't get the saddle high enough either.
