Hi,
Who uses a expander gear on a 1x10 29er?
My concerns are,
will the chain, rear mech require some modification?

I currently run my 29er with a 36 chain ring with a XT 10 speed 11-36 cassette but on the really long, hard and steep Yorkshire rides, towards the end of the rides I wish I had that old Granny gear to drop into.
Other than changing the front ring to a smaller one would a 40t rear cog be worth a try?
Who uses one and how do you find it?
Thanks.

Yeah,
Just converted my Anthem 29 to 1 x 10 with a 42t One up sprocket.
Had issues using a Dura ace 16 tooth to even out the spread.
Put a 16 tooth XT sprocket in and sorted it out.
A bit of fine tuning was needed but working well now.
Running a 32t narrow wide to give the same bottom gear as my double set up.
Top gear is a bit spinny on road but fine off road.
Mite put on a 34 narrow wide for local runs.
Thanx,
Max

I'm running the hope t-rex with no problems. Went from a 30x11+36 to a 32x11-40. Gave me a bit lower and a bit higher gear, but I do live in Surrey. I haven't bothered with the 16t sprocket, and I haven't noticed tbh.

If you go with the Oneup version, they are now including a 16t. Installed mine last week (26er) and it's great. Has definitely put the brakes on me shelling out for 1x11

Why does having a 29er make an "expander" gear any more or less good/optimum/cool/rad *delete as appopriate?

Eh? Because the wheel size means that gearing is higher, so having a lower "expander" is more optimum/good/cool/rad if you are struggling with your current gearing.

Or have I miss understood your question?

If the gearing is higher due to being a 29er, you compensate by running a smaller chainring Shirley?

To be fair, the OP is considering a smaller chainring, but is asking of the pluses and minus of an expander and it gives a bigger spread of gears, which is obviously true whatever the wheelsize.

I've just got a Hope 40T and it works fine. I must admit that there is a loss in shifting quality due to adjusting the b-tension a bit, but it still works fine.

Yep, you just get a larger spread of gear ratios on 1x10. Compensates for being weak and feeble.
