[#9957946]

I'm about to buy a new bike that comes with 30mm rims and I'd like to change the tyres on it to 2.3 TR minions, as opposed to the 2.5 WT  high rollers that the Bike comes with.

Is a tyre that small going to be ok on a wide rim? Or do I need to stick to the WT versions?

Cheers

Nope they'll be fine. I have 2.3 minions on DT m502 rims and they work well. The sidewall is maybe a little more exposed but nothing extreme. Is there a reason you want to swap? Just curious as I'm thinking about trying a WT on the front.

Almost ideal rim width imo. I run 2.4 front and 2.25 rear on 35mm internal rims - gives a really nice shape and feel

Why go with smaller tyres?

you get quite a square profile on 30mm compared to 25 with the HR2's

I've been running 2.35 Miniions on 30mm rims for a wee while now and I've not died!

Thanks everyone,

My reason for wanting to go smaller is primarily because the bike I'm getting is a beast of enough already without having massive heavy tyres. I'm sure that would be great for bike parks, but this bike won't be getting used for that.

So really I was just thinking that the WTs would have a bit too much drag for general riding

Not long since fitted a Minion SS to a 29mm (internal) and imo it's too square in that even run at 36psi, it rolls on the side tread doing away with the intended advantage of the SS part of Minion.

Having said that, a non-SS Minion may be ok as the more prominent centre-tread will lift it off the side tread.

Been trying to decide on this myself.

Got dt swiss 401 rims now, 22.5 internal. Thought about going up to xm 421's 25mm internal. Then started to wonder if going too the effort and cost of rebuilding my wheels for 2.5mm extra width was worth it.

Now thinking about 481's. Did consider Stan's Arch mk3 but read a few things about durability which put me off.

I'm quite happy with 2.3-2.4 tyres.

I've recently moved from 23mm Mavic EN423 rims to NukeProof Neutron wheels with 29mm. I run Minnon 2.3s

I have to admit it's a upgrade with (almost) no downsides so far, it's battered my Strava times every time I've used them.

I'm still playing with them, but I've found I can run a slightly higher pressure and have more grip and they roll better. They're a little rougher over rough ground, not sure if that's because of the slightly higher pressure (we're only talking 5Psi) or because they're fresh and a bit stiffer.

My mates's new Tracer comes with 30mm rims and 2.3 Minions as standard so it's a standard set-up.

Similar experience to poah. My 29er DHR2 had quite a square profile, but also the sidewall was slightly stretched out exposing it more to little cuts and abrasions from pointy things on the trail. 2.25" Trail Boss had similar issues, but my wider tyres don't seem to suffer to the same degree.

Its the pressure. Wider tyres need lower pressure to feel the same as narrower. You've stolen the chief benefit from wider tyres from yourself IMO.
