Second hand CAAD4 cannondale from 2004 onwards (9-speed).

20lb, and a good frame.

Anything new will be pants (tesco have a £250 one with grip shift FFS!)

Defo go with a CAAD from ebay if you can find one; bloody good kit.

Realy depends what you want. Had an R500 Cannondale myself for a few years then got back into MTB; so now have a Carrera Vanquish roadie, which is perfect for road training and sticking on the turbo trainer.

Chap at work asked my advice as I'm the "cyclist" around these parts. Although I have to say, I don't know much of what's around at that price.

You can pick up a new Claud Butler Roubaix for 399 on ebay: carbon fork, Shimano sora group, good alu frame. I've got a Claud Butler Milano for commuting which I'm really happy with (I've even taken it on some road rides when it's too wet for my Focus Cayo, and it keeps up).

£300 second hand will get You a very good starter bike. 9 speed, Tiagra, carbon fork etc. I managed to buy a mint Trek 1200 for just under £300 (full Tiagra, alu frame, under 10kg complete), that kind of money will buy You a good starter CX bike as well, managed to get a Kinesis Crosslight with Ksyriums and full Veloce 9sp for under that amount (also under 10kg).

Search for higher spec Carrera road bikes for VFM, at that kind of a budget look for at least Tiagra shifters. GT road bikes tend to go pretty cheap as well, look for less popular brands like Merida etc. Giant and Specialized tend to be pricier as everyone knows that name 🙂 Weather is still good and previously road bikes were going for silly money but it all should ease off a bit soon.
