1) How wide are the carcasses in real life?
2) Can you run them on normal rims?
3) Do they feel slower on road? I would be doing 50/50 road and off.
4) There is no question 4
5) Do they wear well on road? Thinking larger contact patch = less wear.
6) What pressure do you use?
All questions relating to 29" wheels btw.
1) Pass
2) Yes but they'll tend to squirm/roll around depending on what you consider a 'normal' rim particularly at the lower pressures you'd tend to run them at
3) Of course
4) Yes there is, you've just mislabeled it as number 5.
5) Piece of string... maybe.
6) lower than smaller tyres ๐
I've only used Knards, so based on that....
1) When fitted to a Rabbit Hole (50mm) rim? About 72mm, and the width of the outer knobbles is about 76/77mm. Probably take off 2/3mm on a smaller rim.
2) Yes, but I wouldn't go less than 30mm though. I have a rear wheel built up with a Pacenti DL31 and that's been fine with a Knard all winter.
3) A little, but Knards roll surprisingly well. I often do 30-40 mile mixed offroad and road rides, and you can tootle along at a fait lick on tarmac.
4) Ok
5) Wear has been amazing on the Knards. Still plenty of tread left after 2 years and probably 2000+ miles.
6) 14/15 psi. Less on the beach, and more if I'm doing rooty/rocky stuff.
1) Not all 3" tyres are 3" - just like any other size of tyre
2) Not to get the benefits.
3) Based on riding 4" tyres, I'd say yes. The fat evangelists might lead you to believe otherwise but, despite some evidence that 23/25mm is now being considered too "skinny" for road bikes I reckon there's a lot of folk kidding themselves on. However, it will depend on compound, tread pattern etc - just like any other size of tyre.
5) Pass, but it will depend on compound, tread pattern etc - just like any other size of tyre.

some near answers about something that isn't what you asked about but is close. ish.
I've got a 26in Dirt Wizard (marketed at 2.75 on a crest (Hugo to be ordered shortly!) It comes up at 2.36" across the casing with 20psi in. Great fun off road, bit squirmy, probably, but I've never thought "my god, what a squirmy tyre!" Raced on it, did quite well. but rolling down the hill near me on the first go out (100ft in 0.3 mile) I did not require brakes to stop me accelerating past 20mph. big knobs, low pressure = draggy.
Not all 3" tyres are 3" - just like any other size of tyre
I know, hence the question. Otherwise the answer would've been 3" ๐
My current rims are 28mm.
Just mulling over my options on the Salsa, which is fully rigid. They claim 2.4" max tyre size but I've got 2.35s on now and there's bags of clearance on the rear and even more on the front.
EDIT looks like people are putting 650b wheels on 29ers for bigger tyres...?
I have Chronicles on Duallys on my Krampus...
1) Very - you'll not fit them in the back of your salsa!
2) People have run them on Flows - but it's not the best idea.
3) Depends on pressure. I would say with 15psi in the back and 12 in the front, they are the same draggyness as a normal (not super tacky) full knobbly (eg Hans Dampf) at 30psi. But that is subjective...
4) Yes there is and the answer is Honey Badger.
5) I have done 700km on mine, a good chunk of which will be on road and they still look new.
6) 12 in the front and 15 in the back until this week when I have increased to 15 and 20. (The stupidly hardpack/dusty conditions required a little less shoulder knobble squim). This is based on my Topeak trackpump gauge, you're better off tweaking by perfomance/feel and ignoring other peoples pressures as pump gauges are rubbish.
I'd go 29+ on the front and 29*2.4 on the back of your salsa FWIW.
I'm definitely +curious but a new front wheel is a fair old investment just to see.
I'm pretty much maxed out in the back of my rigid 26in with a 2.4 Race King on a crest (2.33").
Front fork is Salsa Cromoto, I've got the Dirt Wizard at the moment and now the Hugos have landed, I'll be getting one of those. Maybe a 3" Knard at some stage too. Then I wondered if I should be getting a 650B Hugo instead. But then I'd end up with effectively a 69er, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.
People have been trying 650B+ in various frames. Someone somewhere must have tried in yours? is the 28mm internal or external?
28mm external.
