I said he'd run out of talent, and he said he'd run out of brakes!
I was being a bit hard on him, trying to get him on his feet while he was still full of adrenaline because I thought the conditions were so bad that if he sat there for 5 minutes he'd be hypothermic.
Looking at his results he got pulled at Ribblehead.
well done all, wow how bad was the weather! can still feel the rain stinging my face! bloody glad to see the marshals on PYG! was hard, completely crazy winds on the peaks. 5h24 so happish with that. the Ingleborough decent was ace tho!
well done all - nad massive thanks to the marshals, MTR & organisers!

50 mph winds on P-y-G!
4:03 for me, the same time as last year in fact. 54th place, which I'm dead chuffed with.
I loved every second of it, but then I always do love this race.
Need to recover now as I'm solo-ing Relentless 24 next weekend....
Bloody hell Jase! 4.03 is the best time I've ever managed and that was in good conditions. I did a dreadful 4.45 today, not all of it can be blamed on the conditions. I should have been a good 20 mins quicker, even in that weather. Felt like I was just out for a Sunday social, just couldn't get the legs to turn.
it wasn't a day for a PB. the conditions on the tops must have added 10 or 15 mins to everyone's time.
My PB is 3:09, the same as the winning time from today. I had a few issues but could still only muster 3:40.
Was a hard day indeed, respect to anyone that finished and even more respect to all the marshals, helpers and timing guys. a truly memorable 50th Anniversary!
Slowest time so far for me 4:39. Absolutely loved it! What an epic day! ;0)
That was it crikey. I could see what you were doing, just thought it was a classic comment and I'll try and remember it! That was me on the black Vapour who was just below him when he fell. Would have stopped longer but you seemed to have it under control.
Oh and people with 80mm deep section wheels what were you thinking, it must have been like carrying a kite up there?Yup that was me ! No problems to report here, rode all the descents no dabs.
Fair play to you Wool but it just seemed so windy that it would only add to the problems that I was suffering with the bike blowing all over the place.
Chipps, that wasn't Si Pato that flatted and got the van ride was it?
It was Si P that got the ride yes. Stanny offered him a wheel but then changed his mind and went into rescue mode as he wasn't really with it...
Deep section rims here. Silly idea as I got blown sideways - mostly when carrying, but they were the only wheels that fit the bike...
Ah I was rolling along the ground most of the time rather than carrying (my preferred style)
My life, some of the times mentioned above!
Third time and third finish for me and steadily slower each year until I achieved my natural level - DFL in 6 hours 55. A few minor offs but no mechanicals or major issues, just slow - I'd prefer not to relate how deep the pond was at the bottom of PYG lane by the time I got there though.
Tricky part was getting to Ribblehead with 15 minutes to the 2 p.m. cutoff at the bottom of PYG and realising that I had a chance of making it then regretting doing so for the next few hours!
That really was the hardest thing I've ever done.
The fabulous ease of carrying the superlight bike I borrowed was somewhat offset by deep rims and the 'windsurfer effect'. I was scared to carry at some points in case it took me over the edge.
Thanks to the people who picked me up after the comedic 'I can't stop moment' which took me otb on Whernside. Loved Ingleborough and the Pen y Ghent pond though. It's really weird how you don't feel the wet and the pain until it's over. It's really quite hard to move now though!

Congrats to everyone who did it and survived 🙂
Was I not "still" off the bike I had planned to try to get an entry this year (with it being the 50th and John's last and all that). Looks proper 'epic' this year. Hope no-one ended up using their 'survival bag'!
Just realised that I was next to Frischy on the way up Inglebugger!
Funniest moment for me was coming down Pen y Ghent. It's apparent that no matter how rubbish I am as a descender (very...) that there were plenty of people worse than me so I was passing quite a few folk. Problem is, PyG is a two-way track so it's quite difficult in places to avoid everyone.
So I'm heading down and I can see a rider in front weaving and mincing a bit so I yelled out "PASSING RIGHT!" which was met almost instantly by a mate on the climbing side of the track (who I hadn't seen until then) responding with "STRAVA!!" 😆
That kept me smiling all the way to the finish, even if I did nearly fall off laughing at the time.
Slowest time so far for me 4:39. Absolutely loved it! What an epic day! ;0)
I did 4:38, so we must have been battling it out towards the end.
What a day!! First attempt and I'll be back for more. Now I know what to expect, I'll be a little more prepared for next time. I was on a Planet X Uncle John that had hastily been converted from commuter duties to a 'crosser. Old disc pads went on the final part of the descent to the turn up Pen Y Ghent lane (interesting descent...). I had to brake with my heels when nearing the finish. Still surprised I made the turn into the funnel!
I ran tubeless; no issues at all. Mates told me it was wel dodgy - nah! Mavic A119, Vitorria XM? Some ghetto rims strips and 80ml of Joe's latex stuff - brilliant!

Those tyres ain't 35c Tommy!! Obviously didn't read the rules...
Tommy rocks
Big Ted
I saw you DFL'd - good effort to be out in that for so long.
Were you riding some 1950's hub-braked gate?
I took your old TiX for it's third (and slowest) time.
Yet to puncture, though I did nearly drown in the l'aal puddle coming off PyG.
Yes, I was out for quite a bit but thought I may as well get value for money. It also seemed that the PYG 'pond' got deeper as time went on - by the time I got there on the way down it was almost waist deep.
That link opens up a dropbox file in Excel which lists all the ride data you could ever wish to know as well as a lot that's simply depressing. Trying to work out how Jebby can be 3 minutes PER MILE quicker than me?!

TwinklyDave's account is a good read. I blame him for the weather, he said it wasn't hard enough for him previous years: http://www.twinklydave.com/
I shall add my words into the mix. Long day. Awesome race by Terrahawk, same time as last year! Wonder what he'll get up to this weekend?
Sunday was my first time.
And I'd read that it was a love it or hate it event.
Decided not to go down the night before, as I didn't fancy camping with the rain and wind, so set off from Edinburgh at 4.45am.
Knew what to expect from the reputation and videos I'd seen, though it took some positive tunes on the ipod while sitting in the car to get myself up for it, horizontal rain outside against the window.
Basically plodded round in 6.12 (487th) and loved every minute, had a puncture coming down off Whernside (despite having bought Schwalbe Land Cruisers especially) but managed to keep warm while fixing it behind a dry stone wall. Loved the atmosphere, the chat, the course, the spectators - I just think it's a totally magical event. Quite chuffed to have done it on the 50th anniversary and in such tough conditions.
Will I be back? Definitely, but I'll be hoping for dryer / easier conditions. I just need to practice more on a CX bike on technical terrian, so I can make up more time on the downs.
I am in awe of anyone who did that. We went to watch as usual but had to go pretty quickly as small boy’s waterproof suit was too small and he was getting pretty cold.
Is there anyone else out there who just can't stop eating? I got back on my bike today and my legs shuddered. Might have had a Jens Voigt moment... 🙂
aye Clover, I've had the munchies since I crossed the finish line!!
Commuted to work on the bike every day this week, but it's SORE.
I now feel like a complete pansy (especially after reading all of the reports of everyone else that tougher through it)...didn't make the cut off at chapel-le-dale. Had done lots of walking up steps, thinking with hindsight that practicing RUNNING up steps would have stood me in better stead! No clue on race pace and a complete lack of rain in the middle section of the states made riding in mud a completely alien activity.
Hoping to give it another try again next year (assuming it will be run) now I have better feel for what to expect.
Kudos to all the volunteers for standing out in that stuff so we could play out in it!
STL (flying home at the weekend with tail firmly between legs in shame). 😳
STL, get your head held high! That was a particularly grim edition of the 3 peaks and to be there and take part for however long is something to be proud of.
Come back and give it another go, please!
Some great reading folks 🙂 Brings back the whole thing. My only aim was to finish and tick the 3 Peaks box, with the looming weather this was turning out to be a challenging target. I did manage though at just a bit over 6hrs. This included 4 over the bars incidents (3 comical, 1 ouch) and the realisation that I should have practiced carrying the bike and walking up hills a lot lot more than I did! On the day I thought I cycled Ok, but the carrying bits and ascents killed me.
Leading up to the race I had two separate conversations about doing something then leaving it alone. If it all goes well why tempt fate by going back when so much could go wrong? I keep telling myself this but can't shake the urge to go back and get up those hills that bit quicker.
A question for the disc users, did you find the disc helped? I went through one set of front and back blocks and also had to stop and pull some extra cable though! I wondered if discs were the answer?
I've never done it on cantis as this was my first time but have recently switched to a disc braked bike.
They were much easier to use than my cantis, lighter touch to get powerful braking so I was able to relax my arms and hands more.
They always worked at all points the limiting factor (other than skill) was the grip of my tyres.
They did wear down a lot but I think I had organics in. They are bb7 and I had to wind them in a bit to keep them working. Pads went from used on the road, burnt in and virtually new to about 1/2 wear.

Change your pads would be my answer! I do think discs would help, but 4th time on canti's and have had no braking or wear issues.
FWIW on TRP Euro-cross-X's with Swiss Stop Green inserts on alu rims. Its more about where and for how long you brake, than how hard you brake.
However, I do think I'd be less fatigued on discs. Arms get a pummling despite running cross top levers and wider bars to mimic mid 90's MTB position (48cm).
