[Closed] 2x9 - options for new chainset?

[#1989706]

Final piece in the jigsaw in my new build is the chainset.

Currently running an oldish LX HT2 crank with 22/32/bash and a 11-32 out back.

However, tempted to upgrade and/or tweak.

What options are there for 2x9?
I've seen some nice 970 XTR cranks on WW running two TA rings and no bash.
I could just fit a SLX double but I am tempted by the lighter options.

Pretty much anything - two chainrings, narrow bolts, no need for a bash.

yeah, the missus had a Duo for a while but the shifting was poor so I'm not attracted to that.

I guess the main question I'm juggling with is whether to spend money on a it or not - whether a M970+TA rings setup is worth it over the heavier SLX?

Do you want to stick with similar ratios? If so you may as well just stick with a standard crank as you have now. You can convert anything with the bits clubber mentions.

If you want something slightly more XC the obvious solution is the new SRAM cranks, XX, X.0, X.9 or X.7 with 26/39 or 28/42. Otherwise there's Race Face Next, Middleburn Duo and FRM spring to mind for dedicated doubles. Lightning do some very nice ones too, they make the Specialized cranks, they're very light for not a vast amount of money.

cheers njee

the Srams look interesting. I initially baulked at the Srams as the XXs are so expensive but now the cheaper options are coming through they are an option.

If the shifting's a patch on XX they'll be great too, although I've been a bit disappointed with chainring longevity.

Duc, no Lightning distributor AFAIK, they're about $650 online I think, combine with these to get an incredibly light set up for not much more than XTR/XX.

The new SRAM options might be cheaper, but not much.

X0 £424.99
X9 £249.99
X7 £176.99

I'd go SLX double and change the rings at some point.

I think that's the way forward too. The Srams look good but I can't quite see the value.

Rings are £30-£50 a pair, depending on make, which means the cranks themselves are £150-350 which is, frankly, silly money.
