[#3653639]

I've started to build my MTB for the next season. I'd like to try a double chainset. I've 11-32 XT cog at the moment, but I'm not sure about chainrings... I'll ride the bike on XC/marathon races and 12/24h events. I've found the following options: 39/26, 40/26, 40/27, 40/28, 42/27. What do You suggest? What do You have?

Thanks

40/28 for me. Everything from XC to 24hr events. never felt under geared, though ive got an extra 2 teeth on the back than you would have.

What chainset do you already have? Becuase you don't have to go for a brand new chainset you can just change the chainrings - giving you more options.

I'd also consider going 2x10 instead as that will give you a greater range on the back (11-36) and thus more flexibility on the front..

I have 960 XTR chainset...

And I'd like to change only what I have to.

22/ 36 for me. You only loose the top two gears from a conventional triple. Depends on your riding style and terrain of course

22/36? Seems to be a little bit low for racing...

depends on your style and the race. 24 hr events? Low gears are good and the 36 / 11 top gear can be pedalled to high 20s mph. depends on riding style and terrain

Proper racing snakes might want higher, flat / easy terrain maybe higher.

36/11 seems to be low for long descending on marathon races.

40/26 11x34 for me, does everything i want, I personally wouldn't want to go smaller at the top end, there are occasions when a bigger gear would be nice, mainly road work though.

With the M960 cranks you're pretty scuppered because of the 102mm BCD, so it's new crank time.

I liked 40/28 on a 9 speed, with an 11-34 cassette, XT doubles are available in 40/28. Alternatively SRAM do 26/39 if you want a tiny bit lower.

I now run 1x10 with a 36 and find that even better.

I'd like to modify the m960 cranks. That would be lighter thans the Sram XX and could use any 104/64bcd rings.

XX isn't particularly light. How are you going to modify it?

I'd like to modify the bcd to 104. (To be honest, I'd like to ask sy to do this with CNC machine. ๐Ÿ™‚ )
