I'm looking to go 2X9 and I'm just wondering what combinations you're running and what your level of fitness is.
I'm going to be running an 11-34T cassette but it's what chainring sizes I choose. I currently drop down to the very lowest gear for steep climes which either go on for a bit or there isn't much grip available. I think I'm also jsut being lazy too, though.
So I'm thinking of running 24/38T chainrings with my current 11-34T cassette. Would this be a good combo for general XC/trail riding?
Depends on what stuff you climb. I'm reasonably fit but living in Scotland there are lots of big steep climbs where I could be cranking away for 30 mins to an hour on 22/34. The 22/36 front works perfectly and can't say I've ever really spun out 36/11. By the time you get to that speed you might as well coast unless you're racing
I run 22/32 with 11-34 out back on my FS.
I find it ideal for pretty much everything bar the smoothest of fire roads/roads on marathon events - but then again at around 18-20mph it's fast enough.
Fitness wise, erm in general a silver medal standard sportive rider and top 50 finisher on CRC marathons
I run 22 /36 chainrings with 11/34. On the grounds you can never have too low a gear and that if I am spinning out 6 /11 top gear I am doing the best part of 30 mph and thats fast enough for me offroad. Only occasionally onroad do I wish for a higher gear
27/42 with 11-34.
Nice long climbs for me, 550m straight climbing over 8-10km, where you can just bang away at the pedals. Even on the steeper stuff I didn't find problems, but I don't have much very technical stuff, I can hit a reasonable pace pretty much 100% of the time.
I might just try 22/36T if I won't spin out 36/11T. It means I'll have more low gears but there's a part of me that is saying to put a 24T inner ring on so I don't get lazy on the hills. ๐
